Or it can be the result of nerve irritation. Nerve irritation, sciatica, usually comes from a problem in your low back. It could be because of a disc bulge, joint inflammation in the spine, or sacroiliac joint sprain in the back of your pelvis.

Here at Afon House our highly experienced team are dedicated to serving the local community in Salisbury and surrounding areas helping Leg Pain sufferers just like you get back to doing the things they love.

If you would like to know more

Use the blue box on this page to Get your Copy of the Afon House Leg Pain Information Pack This is our approach to Leg Pain. The pack includes 5 Simple Ways to Relieve Leg Pain at Home.

Or go to our online booking page to book in for a FREE TELEPHONE CHAT with one of our Registered Chiropractors to discuss your problem.

First Aid for Leg Pain

Gentle stretching of the leg will help if the problem is mainly muscular, provided there is no tear in the muscle. If the muscle is torn there will be bruising. If you suspect a torn muscle, rest, use a cold pack, apply gentle compression, and elevate the leg to reduce swelling.

Use a Cold Pack

To cool it down use a cold pack. Wrap a cold pack (a bag of frozen peas works well) in a couple of tea towels and place it over the area of pain for 20 minutes only. Put it back in the freezer for at least an hour to allow your skin to recover, then repeat. If the cold pack is too cold for comfort, put another tea towel around it. If you use the medication with heat, you will be cancelling one out with the other! Use a cold pack to enhance the effect of the medication.

Nerve Pain

If the leg pain is nerve pain coming from your low back (Sciatica) – then treating your leg is ineffective. The aim is to take the pressure off the nerve in your low back to stop it firing and sending excruciating pain into your leg. Use a cold pack but put it on your low back. Wrap a cold pack (a bag of frozen peas works well) in a couple of tea towels and place it in the small of your back for 20 minutes only. Put it back in the freezer for at least an hour to allow your skin to recover, then repeat. If the cold pack is too cold for comfort, put another tea towel around it. This will help. Don’t use heat. If you are taking medication for the pain, it will be an anti-inflammatory drug – to cool things down. If you use the medication with heat, you will be cancelling one out with the other! Use a cold pack to enhance the effect of the medication. If your leg pain reduces with use of the cold pack on your back, you will know that your low back is the source of your leg pain.

How Nerve Pain Works

You have managed to irritate your low back and the little joints between the bones in your spine swell up. The swelling presses onto a nerve where the nerve leaves your spine. The pinched nerve is now firing. And the nerve goes down your leg. So, this is where you feel the pain. To stop the pain, you have to reduce the swelling in your low back which is causing the nerve to fire. It’s a bit like a doorbell. Don’t try to muffle the bell (your leg). Get the finger off the button by the front door (the swelling in your low back) and stop the bell ringing. By using a cold pack to take the swelling out of the offending joint in your low back. This will work even if you don’t have pain in your low back but have nerve pain in your leg.

Still getting pain?

If you have tried resting it but the pain comes back again as soon as you push it, come in and see us.
Thu, 03 Sep 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Ankle and foot pain https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/ankle-and-foot-pain https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/ankle-and-foot-pain
Does this describe you?

You are struggling with Ankle and Foot Pain and are not sure what to do or who to ask.

You are frustrated that your Ankle and Foot Pain are stopping you from doing the things you love.

You are having difficulty sleeping because of your Ankle and Foot Pain and this is affecting your energy and wellbeing during the day.

You are taking painkillers or other medication for your Ankle and Foot Pain and would like to stop.

You are starting to worry that this isn't ever going to get better as episodes of your Ankle and Foot Pain are getting more frequent and taking longer to go.

Ankle and Foot Pain causes lack of concentration, poor sleep, bad temper and generally makes life exceedingly difficult.

Ankle and Foot Pain often follow injuries such as a sprained ankle. A large baby from a small Mum won’t have much room towards the end of the pregnancy. Add to this the birth process of being rudely pushed out into the world by terrifically strong muscles, and the result can be a few ‘jammed up’ joints in the spine. Babies are uncomfortable if the tiny joints in their backs are not moving freely. They want to curl up, so they want to be held all the time. They cry when you lie them down because they are uncomfortable. They can’t sleep, so nobody sleeps.

Chiropractic very gently releases any tension in your baby's back and make them comfortable again, with a technique called touch and hold. It's so gentle that you won't see anything happening, but you will be very aware of the results. Stretch very gently and well within pain tolerance. Sit with both hands on your knees, and your feet flat on the floor. Keeping your hands on your knees, slowly bend your elbows to lower your chest towards your knees. Stop when the pain in your low back reaches your tolerance level (the more gently you do this, the more effective it is, so go easy). Let your head gently drop forwards and relax your shoulders. Hold this position, breathing gently for a count of 30, then slowly push on your arms back to upright. This can be repeated as often as you would like provided it is done gently. They are areas of pain around the elbow where muscle attaches to the bone. Tension in the muscle pulls on the bone causing bone pain whenever you try to take strain through the elbow.

To fully relieve the muscle tension and stop the bone pain, the mechanics of the whole arm have to be addressed and the balance of the muscles restored. Chiropractic works to achieve this and allows the elbow to heal.

First Aid for Elbow Pain

In the short term the pain can be kept under control with the use of ice packs and gently stretching or massaging the offending muscles in the forearm.

Use a Cold Pack

The bone at the elbow is irritated and inflamed and needs to be cooled down. Wrap a cold pack (a bag of frozen peas works well) in a couple of tea towels and wrap it around your elbow for 20 minutes only. Put it back in the freezer for at least an hour to allow the skin around your elbow to recover from the cold, then repeat. If the cold pack is too cold, put another tea towel around it. This will help. Don’t use heat. If you are taking medication for the pain, it will be an anti-inflammatory drug – to cool things down. If you use the medication with heat, you will be cancelling one out with the other! These muscles are a main source of the neck pain. To gently ease the muscles, drop your chin to your chest and place both hands onto your head with your fingers interlaced. Let your elbows drop and your arms and shoulders droop so the weight of your arms is hanging on your head. Don’t pull. Relax. You will feel the tension in the muscles in the back of your neck. Count steadily to 30 and allow the muscles to slowly stretch very gently. Then remove your hands from your head. The neck pain should be easier. Repeat as often as you like, but always very gently. And only apply as much pressure as is comfortable.

And use a Cold Pack

To reduce inflammation in the joints in your neck (another source of your pain), wrap a cold pack (a bag of frozen peas works well) in a couple of tea towels and place it on the back of your neck for just 5 minutes out of each hour. Keep repeating this. If the cold pack is too cold, wrap another tea towel around it. This will help. Don’t use heat. If you are taking medication for the pain, it will be an anti-inflammatory drug – to cool things down. If you use the medication with heat, you will be cancelling one out with the other! Use a cold pack to enhance the effect of the medication.

Pillows

We recommend feather pillows (or similar if you have allergies), not too stuffed. The pillow needs to be soft so you can then mould it to support your neck. It shouldn’t be a solid block of foam.

Shaped orthopaedic pillows work for some people, but they have to fit your neck, and what are the chances of that? They can also be quite expensive. Memory foam is good for packing delicate objects.

Still getting pain?

If you have tried resting it but the pain comes back again as soon as you push it, come in and see us.

Tue, 06 Oct 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Headaches https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/headaches https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/headaches
Does this describe you?

You are struggling with Tension Headaches and are not sure what to do or who to ask.

You are frustrated that your Tension Headaches are stopping you from doing the things you love.

You are having difficulty sleeping because of your Tension Headaches and this is affecting your energy and wellbeing during the day.

You are taking painkillers or other medication for your Tension Headaches and would like to stop.

You are starting to worry that this isn't ever going to get better as your Tension Headaches are getting more frequent and taking longer to go.

Headaches cause lack of concentration, poor sleep, bad temper and generally make life exceedingly difficult.

Headaches are often the result of tension building up in the neck muscles. Distraction injuries cause sprains because joints are stretched beyond their normal tolerance.

We will take a detailed history of the injury in order to fully understand the effect this incident has had on your anatomy. Sometimes the injury will have been some time ago, so there will then be overlying compensations which your body has made over time. Our detailed examination will identify which of your joints have been impacted or distracted and the the effect this has had on the soft tissues which support those joints.

For information on the area where you are feeling pain, and for advice in the short term please go to the relevant body-part section of 'What's Your Problem' on this website.
Tue, 06 Oct 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Arthritis https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/arthritis https://afonhouse.co.uk/treatments/arthritis
Does this describe you?

You are struggling with Arthritis and are not sure what to do or who to ask.

You are frustrated that your Arthritis is stopping you from doing the things you love.

You are having difficulty sleeping because of the pain of your Arthritis and this is affecting your energy and wellbeing during the day.

You are taking painkillers or other medication for your Arthritis and would like to stop.

You are starting to worry that this isn't ever going to get better as episodes of pain with your Arthritis are getting more frequent and taking longer to go.

The Pain of Arthritis causes lack of concentration, poor sleep, bad temper and generally makes life exceedingly difficult.

Here at Afon House our highly experienced team are dedicated to serving the local community in Salisbury and surrounding areas helping Arthritis sufferers just like you get back to doing the things they love.

If you would like to know more

Use the blue box on this page to Get your Copy of the Afon House Arthritis Information Pack This is our approach to Arthritis. The pack includes 5 Simple Ways to Relieve Arthritis at Home.

Or go to our online booking page to book in for a FREE TELEPHONE CHAT with one of our Registered Chiropractors to discuss your problem.

Arthritis is very common in the UK. The joint changes are a normal aging process. Though it can be aggravated as a result of old injuries. Arthritis tends to make joints stiffen up. Then they may become painful. Though there seems to be no correlation between the level of pain and the level of arthritic changes to the bones in a joint. Chiropractic gently restores movement back to the joint. The movement will not be as full as it used to be, but it will be considerably less painful.

First Aid for Arthritis

Use a cold pack

Most of the pain of Arthritis comes from swelling around the joints. Removing the swelling will reduce the pain. A cold pack will reduce the swelling. Don’t use heat. If you are taking medication for the pain, it will be an anti-inflammatory drug – to cool things down. If you use the medication with heat, you will be cancelling one out with the other! Use a cold pack to enhance the effect of the medication.

Movement can help

But within reason. Do too little and the joints stiffen up. Do too much and the joints become irritated and inflamed. The trick is to hit the balance, even though it changes from day to day. So, be smart and pace yourself. And if you think you have done too much, use the cold pack straight away, don’t wait for the swelling and the pain to build up.

Stretching can help

When muscles tighten, they compress the sore sides of the joint together, causing pain. Very gentle stretching will relieve the tension in the muscles and allow the joint a little more space. But do also use the cold pack to stop the space filling with swelling which it will do if it is particularly aggravated.

Still getting pain?

If you have tried resting it but the pain comes back again as soon as you push it, come in and see us.
Tue, 06 Oct 2020 00:00:00 +0000
